Groove Catch Free

Groove Catch Free app for iPhone
A lot of people seemed to enjoy this game, according to the app's ratings.  I decided to give it a try.  It seemed like a Dance Dance Revolution / Karaoke Revolution / Guitar Hero style game, but with Asian pop stars and Pop Media characters.
This review is for the free version, mind you.  For all I know the full version is more fun?  I certainly hope so... Let's just say that this application left me completely unsatisfied.  It wasn't even vaguely entertaining for me.  Perhaps it's just not my genre.  But then, I loved Karaoke Revolution, Dance Dance Revolution and the likes.  It could just be that the conversion of this style game to an app just isn't as fun.
The music in the game is interesting enough (Though sometimes a bit annoying to me), and you can choose from various catchy tunes.  The characters are colourful and bright.  The basic game play is simple enough.  I'm not sure why I found it so dull.
Let's go over the top buttons on the launch screen.
The star to the left will take you to the official homepage.  the page is in Japanese and has links to their Facebook and Twitter pages from there.
The cog will take you to the settings options that you can view in the screen to the left.  You should be able to figure everything out here.  I do respect the app creators for translating this application to English before releasing it to the US market.  Props for that!
The pencil icon will take you to the 'Help' section.  it'll take you through the song types, the game play and other tid bits of useful information.  i suggest reading through this before playing the game itself.
The music note takes you to a page where you can learn about the music from the game & download it via iTunes.
Tapping the main screen (Not the buttons) will take you to the mode select screen you see to the right.
You'll see 4 button choices.  Starting from the top we have a mode where you'll see a line coming from the top of the screen.  As it passes over the coloured bars, tap the bottom button (Of 4 available) that is directly under that coloured bar.  Tap it 'just' as the line is on it for the best score.  The background image is stationary.  it is not a moving video.  I say this because I was under the impression that, like the similar style of console games, this game was played over a video screen.
The second mode does not have the bottom buttons.  It is played exactly as the first game mode, but this time you tap the actual coloured bars themselves as the bar passes over them.  Remember that if the bar is long, keep your finger on that bar until the line has completely passed over it.  These are "press and hold" notes.
The next mode is the strawberry catching mode.  You can see a sample screen to the left.  The song/music plays in the background.  You still have a stationary picture behind you.  However, now you control a small character at the bottom of the screen.  Tap left and right to control her.  Strawberries will fall from the top of the screen.  It is your job to catch all of them (Or as many as you can).  I have noticed some lag in this mode (I have iPhone 4 iOS6).  She sometimes stutters in her movement which can cause the strawberry catching to be a bit more of a challenge than it should be.  Also, there are 'press and hold' items here as well.  They are what I can only assume to be cookie sticks.  Long pink items that you must try to catch all of.  Sometimes they come down diagonal, which means you have to move with it as you catch it.
The last mode is like the above strawberry catching mode.  Only, rather than tapping to move her, you tilt your device side to side to position her under the falling treats.  I find that this mode runs more smoothly than the above mode as well.
I think this would be an enjoyable application for people very interested in Japanese pop culture and media.  The music is very digital and the characters are very 'cutesy'.  There is a wide selection of music available, each with it's own level of difficulty.  You can also choose to play each level in either Easy Mode or Speed mode.
Some levels are only available if you upgrade to the paid version.  Some are available if you rate the application, post about it on Twitter or Like it on Facebook.
Some of the artists featured in this application are as follows: Hatsuna Miku, Cutie Pai, Spoon+, Mizuka, CTO Lab, NUXX, OMODAKA, BrokenDoll, PORAPORA, Mitome Makoto, Lotze, THE APRILS, MuMu, THE LADY SPADE, Tokimeki Express & many more.
Although I personally did not enjoy this application (And the file is HUGE! So I'll be removing it from my device), I think some people may.  Just don't expect it to be too much like the console games of the same genre.  You'll end up being disappointed, like me.
