This is a fun and cute educational application. Though it's targeted toward a younger audience (Grade school/middle school) it can be enjoyed by all. Remember all those things in school you learned, but don't remember? How about a fun review of them?
Every month you'll get a new theme. With new video and quizzes. I think this is really fun. It gives you a reason to keep coming back. As you can see in the screen shot to the right, I saved this when the theme was Newton's Law of Motion. Currently the theme is Recycling.
Let's go through the various parts of the application.
On the top left you'll see "Play the Movie". This will begin the short animation. The short film features the two main characters, Tim and Moby. It will go over the theme you're learning about. Teaching you various facts about that subject.
To the left you can see a screen of the movie playing (The the characters are not present on this part of the video). The robot doesn't speak, but the human, Tim, does. Everything said within the short is also subtitled at the bottom of the video (As you can see).
At the end of the animation you'll get the option to "Replay the Movie" or "Take the Quiz". Also, during the movie (and after) you can see some buttons above the play area. These buttons take you back to the launch screen, take you to where you can browse other animations and share the movie through email.
At the bottom of the screen there is also a "Options" button and a "list" button that takes you to more videos.
Back on the main screen, "Take the Quiz"... This is something you should do after watching the video.
You will get a series of questions with multiple choice answers. When you get the answer correct, the robot pops up and nods "Yes" while the screen displays "Correct".
If you get it wrong the robot shakes his head "No" furiously. The screen says "Nope! Try Again". You can then choose a different answer.
There are 10 questions in each quiz. At the end you'll get to type in your name. it will keep score of how many answers you got correct (On the first try). You'll have your own score board so you can see how well you've been doing.
There are buttons at the top of the quiz screen also. From here you can return to the launch screen, play the movie that the questions are about or see your previous scores.
The buttons at the bottom take you to the video lists.
The next option on the main screen is "See Your Scores". This naturally takes you to your score board where you can see the scores you've gotten and what the quizzes were on.
Lastly we have the option to view "Related Videos". This will show you a list of other available videos that relate to the current theme. Some movies are free, some you must pay for. There is a "Free movies" button you can click to view only the free ones.
Don't worry, the pay movies do not need to be purchased individually. You can get a subscription which will unlock all of the movies. This is called "Brain Pop Full Access". It costs 6.99USD a month. Alternatively, you can choose "Brain Pop Explorer", which allows you to access 4 related movies and quizzes. This costs 1.99USD per month.
Though these are really fun and educational, I'm not sure I'd be willing to pay a monthly fee to see additional content. Though, you don't need to. You could just keep up with the current movie of the month as well as the free movies.
In case you are curious on what categories the videos are divided into. Science, Social Studies, English, Math, Arts & Music, Health, Tech & Engineering.
I think it's a cute and fun application. I think it would be really great for a young person being home schooled, or who just wants to learn some things on their own, in a fun way. Though I think the monthly fees are a bit high.
