Death - Fatal love with Tender Reaper

Death - Fatal Love with Tender Reaper
A young woman falls in love with a grim reaper.  Cute graphics, a story translated from Japanese (Not very well) and a whole lot of pop up ads.

This is one of those application games that has very little actual game play involved.  It is very similar to an app I reviewed a while back called Zombie Boy.  This one is a lot shorter, with fewer options and story, however.

The little reaper wanders around your bedroom.  You can tap him to hear little conversation snippets.  Now and then a cat will wander across the screen giving you an option to watch a 30 second ad video to get a free item.  You can choose to ignore it but I suggest watching the video.  This is because using the Move feature will earn you 20 souls at a time.  Then you have to wait for it to reset to get more.  Using the Bonus Stage item you get from the cat can earn you between 100-150 (On average) souls at a time, depending on how fast you are.

The Move and Bonus Stage is how you gather souls to feed your reaper.  Don't waste time tapping them one at a time, use your finger to quickly swipe across them on the screen.  This will especially come in handy on the Bonus Stage when you are timed to gather as many as you can.

Feeding souls to the reaper will level him up.  He will go through different forms as you feed him more and more souls.  Each new form comes with a new story piece and a change in the look of the reaper.  You don't get a CG image until the end of a story play through.  There are 5 CGs total.  One for the intro, one for each of the three possible endings and one for the true ending which you earn after you get every other end.

The story pieces are somewhat interesting but the English is pretty rough and broken.

There is one part of the game I think is really cute and that is that petting the cat will allow your reaper to level up faster.  There are a lot of stories that suggest grim reapers and demons like cats.  I support this lore.  The cat petting button in the top right has 3 charges, then it needs to replenish over time.  You can always watch the reaper pet the cat in the Death's Diary page.  This area allows you to see the reaper forms you have unlocked and read the story so far.

The reapers you get through out the game are as follows: Baby Reaper, Newbie Reaper, Soul Reaper, Sickle Reaper, Growing Up Reaper, Promoted Reaper, Mask Reaper *Which is the one on the icon), Reaper-Looking, Almost Reaper, The Reaper, Minister, A Human Child.

Some of the different forms depend on the choice you make when you are given your 'wish'.  Wishing to stay with the reaper will grant you the Human Child ending.  Wishing for world piece grants the Minister ending and the billionaire one provides The Reaper ending.  Once you finish an ending it resets to the beginning and you can play through for another ending.

The billionaire choice will change the souls into stacks of money.

Now... about those ad popups.  There is the cat that allows you to watch an ad for an item, and I am not opposed to this.  However, I have played the app for less than a 3 minute segment and gotten more than 5 popup ads in that time.  Here are some of the things that can prompt a popup ad in this app.  Using the last cat petting charge, feeding your reaper the last of your souls you collected, clicking Move, using an item, closing the Death Diary or Memiors, closing basically any window within the app.  There is also an ad banner at the bottom of the app.  This just feels like way too many ads for a game that isn't even that impressive and doesn't have a great deal of content.

Users can choose to pay for items in the app to gain more souls, but  considering how easy and fast this app is to complete for free, there isn't really a point.  A better paid feature would be to remove the ads, but there is no such feature, sadly.  The items are the same ones you get for watching the cat's ad.  they cost 0.99USD, 3.99USD or 19.99USD.  I feel bad for anyone who pays 20 USD on this app... honestly.  Please don't do that.

The app is cute, the story is ok (Would be better with decent translations), the ads are obnoxious but it is an ok app overall.  I would give this a slightly higher rating if not for the ads but... I found them to be incredibly frustrating.

Weather Apps

Weather Apps
So, this review will be for 3 different weather apps in one post.  I downloaded all of these while looking for a cute weather app.  I wanted to see if any of them would be able to replace the default weather app I usually use.

かりんの天気予報 (Karin Weather Forecast)
I thought this app would be similar to an app that is no longer available called Moe Weather.  I was never able to use the app but it had a character read the local weather for you.  I can't really compare the two since I never used the Moe one but that was what inspired me to download this app.

The Karin character featured in the app is cute.  However, there is nowhere in this app to set your location.  I assume it uses your current GPS and only uses locations in Japan.  Since I am not in Japan... this did not work.  It doesn't even give you the Japanese weather if you're curious to know what the weather is in Japan.  I can only assume you have to be in Japan for the app to work at all.

There is a scroll bar on the side to make Karin smaller or bigger so you can see the map behind her.  She reacts when you tap on her but she does not make any noises.  Putting your finger on the screen and dragging it around will result in her following your finger movement with her head.  Users can also select an outfit for her from the settings menu in the top right.  The options are a Gothic Lolita costume, and two uniforms in pink or blue.

The translation for the options menu is as follows:
Sound options
On Off
Bookmark startup location (Meaning to remember the location you initially access the app in rather than changing based on current location)
On Off
Change Clothes
3 options available...

The top left toggle on the main screen is whether or not to show the temperature.  The right side of the board shows the current date.

This visuals of the app are fine but the app not working outside of Japan or having any languages available aside from Japanese are a problem.  I would not recommend wasting time downloading this application for weather.

Rated 12+ for the following: Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content and Nudity
Boo Weather: Pomeranian Puppy
For those who have not heard of Boo, Boo is a Pomeranian dog who's photos have circulated all over the internet.  It is a cute and happy looking dog with a round headed teddy bear Asian fusion cut.  The images in this application of of this specific dog.  They are randomly generated for each location and cycled every hour (Like the Yahoo Weather app).

When you start the app cute text pops up saying 'Boo: The world's cutest dog'.  Seems a bit presumptuous off the bat.  However, the app itself is easy to understand and fairly user friendly.

This works just like the Yahoo Weather app.  Swiping left and right cycles through locations you have added.  To add new locations there is a +City icon that allows users to add more cities to the list.

Tapping the Boo head button at the bottom brings up an option to pay 2.99USD to remove the ads from the app.  The share button is pretty self explanatory.  The settings app allows users to change the temperature from Fahrenheit to Celsius or visa-versa.

Within the Settings users can also opt to get notifications when new Boo images are added, Help/FAQ/etc, the Booweather website and the ability to pay to remove ads again.
On the main screen when checking the weather, aside from the dog image in the background you will see the city name, temperature, the day's high/low and what the weather condition is (Snow, overcast, fog, etc).  Swiping up will allow access to more information.

In the swipe up section wind, humidity, UV index, visibility, 7 day forecast, radar, hour by hour forecast, sunrise and sunset time as well as some other information... and several ads.

The popup asking users to rate the app is quite aggressive.  Upon opening the app I got the popup 3 times in under 5 minutes.  Of course I'd assume adding my rating to the app page would stop these.

The app is alright... basically a dog themed version of the Yahoo Weather app.  The ads can sometimes get in the way, but not terribly often. That being said it is a solid application and does what it is supposed to.

Weather Kitty: Forecast & Cats
This is a cat themed weather app that is essentially identical to the Boo weather app I just reviewed above, at least in functionality.  However, there is some minor difference in the options.

Like the Boo app the main screen shows the city, temperature, etc, along with a random cat image.  Some of the cat images are cuter than others.

Swiping left and right changes the location, and more locations can be added with the button at the bottom of the screen.

In the Settings menu there are the same options as the Boo app but there is no link to the BooWeather website.  Instead there is a link to the featured animal shelter.  Clicking this gives you some information on the shelter and a link to the website for that shelter.

Swiping up is how you get to the more detailed weather information where you can find the forecast over the next several days and so on.

The buttons at the bottom of the main screen have the added bin icon to remove ads as well as a Kittens button.

Unlike the Boo Weather app the ad removal here is a bit different.  To remove the ads users have to sign up for a Meow Prime Plan.  these are subscription packages that range from one month to 6 months to a lifetime subscription plan.  The subscription removes the ads but also gives you access to all of the Kitten themes.

Kitten themes can be accessed by tapping the Kitten button at the bottom of the main app page.  All users have access to the Default theme which is what the app has upon downloading.  There is a free theme called Crazy Cat Art as well.  There are several other themes but users need to have Meow Prime in order to download and use them.  These themes include Yoga Cats, Sphynx, Holiday Kitties, Kitty Love and many more.  Users can even create their own theme by uploading their own cat images (Requires Meow Prime).  The themes will change the images available for the main page backgrounds.

The app is cute and does what it is intended to do.  The functionality is simple and it has an easy user interface.  I think the fact that you can upload your own images is a great feature, though I'm not sure I'd wish to pay for it.

Pancake Milkshake

Pancake Milkshake
Anyone who saw the animated film Wreck it Ralph 2: Ralph Breaks the Internet may recall this app being featured.  Even those who never saw the film probably saw the scene in the preview ads with the little girl playing the app on a tablet and Ralph interrupting her game to wreak a little havoc.

The game is quite simple, really.  Swipe the pancakes toward the bunny and the milkshakes toward the kitty.  As the kitty or bunny are given more and more food/drink, they grow larger.  Eventually the one who has gained too much weight will pop.  Once the character has popped the two switch places on the screen.  The unpopped one remains as large as it was previously while the popped one resets and is small again.

The game starts slow but the speed steadily increases the longer you play.  The game is over when the wrong food is given to one of the characters (IE the milkshake to the bunny or pancake to the kitty).

If three of the food items go past the bunny and kitty and end up eaten by the mouth at the end of the track, you will receive a game over as well.

Once it is game over you receive a high score and are able to start over again from the beginning to try to beat your score.  High scores can also be shared to social media to brag to your friends.

Personally my strategy for these sorts of games is to only focus on one side.  Everything that doesn't go on that side goes on the other side.  So rather than splitting your concentration between the two, you focus on just one half.  This allows you to go further faster (In my experience).  As there are only the two characters and two food items, this is a simple way to get through the game

The game is only available in the English language but besides 'Game Over' there really isn't much to read, so it shouldn't matter.

This is a really basic application with no settings, bells or whistles.  It is cute and easy, while still having that challenge factor to beat one's personal best and keep pushing the limits.  It seems appropriate for any age, though keep in mind there are ad banners at the bottom of the app.

My only issue is it may be a bit too basic for me.  I'd love to see more characters or menu items added to give the game more variety and challenge.  Otherwise, it is a very cute and fun application.  And don't worry, I don't think Ralph is going to jump in while you're playing and take over... at least let us hope not!

Days of Van Meowogh

Days of Van Meowogh
Are you a fan of classical art?  Famous painters?  Do you like cats and puzzle games and adorable stories?  This is a great app for you then.  Honestly, this is one of my favourite app games that I tried in 2018.

First things first-- the title... Clearly it is a combination of Van Gogh and the sound a cat makes (Meow).  However, as some people have trouble pronouncing Van Gogh's name, the title of this app may be a bit complicated.  I have attached a link to an article that explains how to pronounce Van Gogh's name here.  Hopefully that shall help clear up any confusion.

One of the immediate points of the game that a new user might find appealing is the art.  Upon opening the app you get an adorable claymation intro scene.  This scene was created by Lunch Box Studios.  The intro scene can be viewed in the video below. (Not my video)

The art within the game is equally as charming.  The soft colours add to the calming and cozy nature of the game.

You play as Van Meowogh, a cat living alone in his former master's home with his mouse friend.  The house is in disarray and has fallen apart since the loss of Van Meowogh's master.  The bills have come due and Van Meowogh has to make ends meet while also fixing up the home to match its former glory.  How does he do this?  By painting of course.  On his journey he will meet many friends and learn many new things.

In order to create a new painting you have to perform several puzzle levels.  Each level will serve as a piece to the full painting concept.  Once all of the pieces are in place, the painting will be completed and sold to an art dealer.  This is how you earn money in the game.

Each puzzle is different from the last.  There are many different strategies and puzzle types to play.  Though the idea is the same.  Matching three or more of the same type of gem will create a set and take them off the board.  Though some levels require you to break blocks by matching things near them or to move objects from the top to the bottom of the puzzle board by matching things below them.

Before you begin a level you will be told if the level is particularly challenging.  You will also have the opportunity to use any items you have gained to help you in the puzzle.  Paintbrush items and Paint bottles help you clear large amounts of gems without matching.  The cheese gives you extra moves to complete the puzzle.  Each item serves a purpose.  You can choose to purchase items with real money but if you are trying to play for free like me, use these items sparingly because you don't accumulate them very quickly.

There is a separate set of items you can acquire that automatically is available to you within every puzzle you play on the far right side of the screen.  However, these are harder to gain than the other items so be careful not to overuse them.

At the end of each successfully completed puzzle level you get a chance to purchase an item set.  It will add one new item to the set, based on how well you did on the last puzzle.  The maximum item types is 3.  You can choose to spend money to purchase this set, wait until your set includes better items or just ignore it entirely, as I did.

If you fail to complete a level you can either use a heart to retry or spend cat food to gain a few more moves and go back to where you left off to see if you can beat the level.  This can come in handy if you were very close to beating the level, however, don't use this tactic frivolously.  It is best to only do this is you are facing a challenging level you have been trying to beat for several attempts or if you are playing during a Splash competition where winning several puzzles in a row gives you special benefits that make the next level you play easier.  Losing your streak during this event will take you back to the beginning with no benefits at all.  While having a streak of 3 wins or more will give you a really nice boost and make levels much easier to manage.

The app has many events and contests fairly regularly.  There is usually one going on at any particular time.  Sometimes there are more than one happening at once.  Finishing in the top during any of these contests can gain you some really nice rewards.  Usually the top three players get a special avatar, the top ten receive clothing for Van Meowogh that they can choose to put on him.  Everyone who participates gets something though.  It also often results in new story lines to follow.

The characters and story are a really big part of this application.  I have found myself smiling and laughing along while I read the interactions that take place.  Plus any individual who has studied art history will find themselves especially interested as many artists (in cat form) appear in this story.  I find myself especially fond of Dali the cat.  Though the interactions between Van meowogh and his mouse companion also really amuse me.

The story takes place in chapters and new chapters are being added over time.  Many of these chapters revolve around completely renovating a room in your house.  The rooms starts out all grey with rubbish and holes and dust everywhere.  Tapping on different things within the room is fun because Van Meowogh will comment on that item.  Purchasing new things for the room has the same affect.  The cat will comment on how much he likes certain items and what reminds him of his master.  Tapping the cat himself will result in other phrases.  These usually revolve around your current place in the story.  Friends coming to visit the room can be tapped as well.

I will briefly go over the different areas of the main screen.

The top left is your heart count.  5 is the maximum amount of hearts.  You can play as many levels as you want.  hearts are only used when you lose a level and wish to replay it.

Your cat food is next to the hearts and can be used to purchase goods  in the shop which is the icon next to the cat food.  taping the cat food itself will take you to a place to purchase more cat food with real money.  However, completing a level results in 50-100 cat food per level, so this should not be necessary.

Top right is where your coins are displayed.  Coins are used to complete parts of the story line.  You can not purchase more coins.  You must gain them through playing the game.

Beside the coins are the settings.  Tapping this opens the settings panel.  Here you can connect your Facebook or email, change your username, toggle the notifications or language settings or view the credits.  You can also turn the sound effects and music on or off from here.

Within the settings panel one can also view the recent news feed, access the help section, or save the QR code to share.

Below the settings button on the main page you will see 3 more buttons.  One has a mouse on it which allows you to purchase the three special items package I mentioned earlier.  The next has an envelope.  This is your mail section which includes friend requests, any items sent to you and hearts sent to you from friends.  if you run out of hearts you can come here to get more (Provided you have friends who send you hearts).

The third button is your friends section.  It has the list of your current friends as well as a way to search for new friends, invite or request.  You can send hearts to all of your friends through this panel as well.  The second tab in this section has suggestions if you wish to add more friends.  Lastly the profile is located here where you can change your avatar, edit your name, copy your user ID or connect your Facebook account.

Any currently active contests/events are on the left side of the main screen.  Tapping these will help you access them.  Different events have different rules.

On the bottom of the main screen you can access the story.  You pay a fee for each section from the coins you earned through play.  From there you read through the interactions and the story progresses.  You can view past chapters, paintings you have completed, friends you have made and anything you collected from special events through the story panel.

The only buttons left on the main screen are a hanger which you use to wear any new clothing you have gained.  You can change this up any time you like.  It has no affect on anything and is purely just aesthetic. And the far right bottom tab shows you what level you are on and allows you to play that level by clicking it.

This game is adorable and can be quite addictive.  I found myself playing it a lot.  I loved reading the story, meeting new characters and doing the puzzles.  The competition aspect also really felt like a reason to keep playing as well.  Though I found during this that fewer people seem to be playing than I would have imagined.  This app has been out for a year and I found it very easy to get into the top 10 of any event.  This application needs more love!  I highly recommend it.  I honestly found absolutely no faults in it.

LINE

LINE App for iPhone
This is my favourite chat program designed for smart phones.  However, once you sign up, you can even use LINE from your computer!
This chat program has a lot of features.  Remember the LINE Camera application I reviewed a few months back?  Well, this is by the same people.  And you can import edited photos from your LINE Camera directly into your LINE chat!
You will be given an ID number when you sign up.  You can choose to change this by signing up for an account, verifying your email and phone number and setting up your own ID, rather than the randomly generated one they gave you.  I suggest doing this (Especially the email verification) especially if you intend to purchase stickers.  If you do not, if you delete the application or switch devices, you'll lose all of whatever was linked to your previous account.  Stickers, friend list, etc.
Let's go over some of the features this has, other than just chatting one on one with your friends.
You can chat one on one or in groups.  Invite all of your club members to a chat room to discuss a topic. Invite all but one of your friends to a room to discuss the surprise Birthday party you're planning for them.
When in a room (A chat room or a one on one room) you'll see some options on the screen.  The top left has a back arrow to return to your friend list or chat list.  The top right allows you to add a friend, turn off notifications for that specific chat window, block the person you're talking to or go into the settings for this chat window.
In the settings menu you can export the chat history to save for later reading.  Delete the chat record... Or change the chat wallpaper.  You can either use your own photo or a wallpaper from the list as your background for the chat room.  Remember, only you'll see this wallpaper.  The other person or people involved in the chat will see the wallpaper they have chosen. There are currently 36 wallpapers available that come with the application for free.  You'll see some of them in my screen shots.  I like to have a different wallpaper for each room I'm in.
Back in the chat window, on the bottom there's the bar you type your message in. Tap it and it will bring up the keyboard.  Type your message and hit send.  There is a limit to how many characters you can write, but it's a big limit.
Want to make your message ore personal?  Tap the icon by the chat window that looks like a face.  This will bring up the stickers, emotes and emoji screen.  There are many free sticker sets you can download.  You can also choose to purchase more with real money (Usually about 2USD each set).  The emoji are little icons that will be placed in your text message.  Things such as hearts, lightning, music notes, crowns, televisions and so on.  The emoticons are little ASCII faces that you can place into your message.  See the screen shot on the left?  My message uses an emoticon and an emoji.
The last option on the chat window screen is the plus sign on the bottom left.  Click this to bring up the screen to show what you can add into the chat.  A photo, a video, a voice message.  You can even show your contact information or current location.  I recommend only using those options with people you know and trust.
Outside the chat room now, when you are viewing your chat list or friend list you can again, see some options around the screen.
Top left is "Edit" This allows you to remove friends or chat rooms.  Top right of the friend page is an add friend option.  Top right on the chat screen is the new chat room option.
The bottom of the screen shows the friend list, chat list, the timeline and "more".
The timeline is a fun feature that allows you to see what new things have been posted by people on your friend list.  Whenever someone posts an update on their life, it will post it here for you to see, comment on or even leave a sticker on.  Click their icon and view their home page.  This will show you that friend's posts.  You can also visit their page by clicking their icon in a chat room or on your friend list.
The image to the left shows what a home page looks like.  It's my home page.  It shows the name and user icon on a graphic of their choosing as your top banner.  Click this on your home page to change the image.  Below this are all of the posts you've made.  A post can be text only, text and a sticker, text and a photo, just a photo, just a sticker, you can add a video or even a location.  However, you can not add a sticker and a photo.  or a photo and a video.  Multiple photos... anything like that.
Tapping the pencil icon in the top right corner of the timeline page allows you to post to your home page.  This post will show up on the timeline of anyone you're friends with.
The top left corner shows your timeline notifications.  If someone leaves you a sticker or a comment, it will be posted here so you'll know.
On to the "More" option at the bottom of our screen.  The screen to the right is what this looks like.
At the top.  Add friend, Settings and Home.  Home takes you to your home screen I mentioned earlier.  The add friend is self explanatory.  Settings takes you to a page with lots of settings you can browse and adjust.  I will list these options here.
     Profile: Display name - What's Up - UserID - Public UserID on/off.
Accounts: Change Your Email - Phone Number  Facebook - Authorized Apps - Devices.
Stickers: My Stickers  Purchase History  Gift Box - Sticker Options.
     Notifications on/off: Mute - Tone - New messages on/off - Show preview on/off - Additional services.
Chats & Voice Calls: Chat Wallpaper - Font Size - Send with Return Key o/off  Screen options.
Friends: Contacts  Hidden users - Blocked Users.
Privacy: Passcode Lock - Public UserID - Generate new QR Code  Clear Chat History - Timeline & Home Privacy.
Help / Tell a Friend / About LINE
Back onto the "More" screen.  From here you can access the Sticker Shop.  You can view all of the available sticker sets.  Some are free, some are paid and some you can get as a promotion for downloading other LINE applications.  You can even give sticker sets as gifts to your friends!
I'll let you know which sticker sets I have.  I have all of the free sets as well as the LINE POP (Promotion) set, The Bizzle (Promotion) set, Rilakkuma, Cony's Happy Work Life, Office Lady Nobuko and Smile Brush.  Ones I would like to purchase in the future (Or you could gift them to me! *Flutters lashes* PetiteKitty is my ID) are My Sweet Day, Monchie Girl Mogumi and Becky's Stickers.
Also from the "More" page you can find Official Accounts.  These accounts displayed depend on the country from where you are accessing.  For the United States, the Official LINE accounts are T-Pain, Kreayshawn and Snoop Dogg.  Apparently rap artists like LINE!  There are more in Korea of course, where LINE is more popular.
You also have notices on the "More" page which are updates posted by NAVER (App creators).  Keep an eye on these because sometimes they'll post about limited time offers like free promotional stickers!
Below these on the More screen are the additional LINE apps you have.  LINE Brush, LINE Camera, LINE POP, LINE Card ans so on will be posted here.  Clicking them will open those applications for you, directly from this app.  How convenient!
I really enjoy this application, and I think you will too.  If you want more information you can check out the Official website.  It's free, adorable and a lot of fun.  You can even make calls from the application, so if you install it on an iPod touch, you can use it like an iPhone! (Provided those you wish to call also have LINE).

CreateShake: Kitty Cat

CreateShake: Kitty Cat App for iPhone
Have you ever wanted to create your own unique kitten?... Me neither... But now you can!  This application allows you to create your own little kitten with it's own unique look.  Not very creative?  That's alright.  Simply shake it around and it will make one for you with random pieces.  Not happy with that look?  Shake it again!
When you start the application, it launches your gallery.  The first time you load it, you will have an empty gallery of course.  So the screen will look as it does to the right.
Click the "new" button and get started choosing features for your new kitten creation.
The entire kitten is customizable.  From the eyes, the nose, the ears, fur, fuzziness, etc... all the way to collars, wings, props and bows.
I have posted some sample screens below.  Click them to view the larger view of the screen.  The first one I was in the process of creating by choosing the individual bits.  The second and third are from shaking the app to see what it came up with.
There are over 200 different bits to mix and match.  So it's highly unlikely that someone else will end up making the same kitten as you.
Once you are happy with the look of your new kitty cat, click the save button at the top of the screen, on the right side.  This will save your creation to your gallery.  You can give your kitten design a name as well.
Once you are in your gallery you can click on any of your creations to view it larger.  From there, there is a share icon in the bottom left corner.  You can email it, Facebook it, save it to your device, twitter it or Tumblr it.
Even though this isn't something I'm going to be spending a lot of time using, I do think it's a cute application.  The artwork is cute and I like how you can change the colours of each item.  I think this app would be especially useful for entertaining a small child.  It could also be used to make cat versions of your friends for fun.  The expressions that you can give the cats are very entertaining and make me smile.  I don't really have any suggestions for improving this application.  but of course as always with apps like this, updates with more items is always something that would be nice.
