Calculator Girl (Dentaku Girl)

Calculator Girl App for iPhone
This is a cute utility for people who like math, and cute cartoon girls.  It's a calculator application that features a glasses wearing young animated female (Nayuta Asougi)) who talks to you while you do your equations.  But that's not all this free application offers...
When you press any of the numbers on the application, she will speak that number out loud (In Japanese).  This could be a useful way for beginners to learn how to count in Japanese.  When you total up your equation, she will tell you the answer out loud as well.  If you clear it, she says "All clear!".
Don't want anyone to see you using such an adorable calculator?  Not a problem.  Click "Panic Mode" and the app is covered by a far more standard looking calculator app.  This can also come in handy if you are currently using a different part of the application, and quickly need to use the calculator function.  But be careful, it's not as incognito as one might want it to be.  She can get bored and start humming while you're still in panic mode.  This could concern people passing by...  Below I have posted what the calculator normally looks like, as compared to the Panic Mode version.
There is, however, a sound button under the panic mode button.  You may use this to turn the sound on and off at your leisure.
There 'are advertisements at the bottom of the screen, but they don't cover anything important.  Also, they are generally not 'safe adverts'... I would not recommend this for anyone too young (Many are for pornographic comic books.  Clicking them will take you to uncensored webpages).  If you purchase an outfit for her, the ads will not be displayed for a short period.  If you purchase at least 2 outfits, you will no longer get ads.
Clicking the question mark button in the upper left will give you a page that shows you how to use the app.  However, it is entirely in Japanese.  Minus points for that...
Clicking the alarm clock opens the app store to their Clock application, featuring the same character.  the clock application is not free.
To access the extra features of this, simply swipe your finger across the screen.  The calculator part will disappear, leaving only the character.  She'll preform a little move and you'll see the extra buttons along each side of her.  To the left, is what it looks like (Maybe not the same outfit though).
As you can see, Panic mode is still present.  Also, you have access to a shop, where you can purchase clothing for her.  Each outfit you purchase for her costs anywhere from 99 cents to 2.99.  Personally, I feel like 3 dollars is an awful lot to pay for one outfit for an animated girl on a calculator...
Below the shop function is the sound function.  Again, you can use this to turn the sound on or off.  If it is lit up, it's on... Otherwise the sound is off.
Below the sound option is the gallery.  The gallery images can be unlocked.  To unlock the images you must use the outfits in the images.  You must talk to her often by tapping her to increase "familiarity", as well as to do many calculations with her.  I am not sure on just how many calculations or how many conversations you must have to unlock the gallery images.  Personally, I have yet to unlock any.
If you tap her, she will tell you a bit about herself.  Or she may ask about you.  Some of the boxes were not translated (It shows the words with her speaking).  Here is some information about Nayuta...
Her name is Nayuta Asougi.  She's in year 2 of high school.  Blood type O.  She is in drama club   She loves mathematics and reading.  Her favourite food is Shiraae.
Let's move on to the left side options now.
The "i" button at the top left will take you to a page with some information about the application.  It has some snap shots of the character, some tips on how to play and so on.  However, this is also entirely in Japanese.  For shame!  It wouldn't take more than a couple minutes for them to have translated this and made it link to the English page for the US version of this application.
Now for the costumes option.  There are 4 costumes you can access for free on this application.  A Summer and Winter uniform on the front page, as you can see to the left.  As well as some pajamas.  If you scroll over a bit you'll also find her jogging suit (3 swipes).  When you choose a new outfit, she will wear that outfit while you are doing calculations or speaking with her.  Changing her clothing is also how you unlock different images in the gallery view.
Wallpaper just changes the background behind her.  A bedroom, the beach, the arctic, a classroom, school hallway, neighborhood, living room, night time in the city, a shrine and another bedroom.
The last option is Omikuji.  Now if you recall from my review of the application Moe Omikuji, this is a style of fortune telling that is popular in Japan.  Choose one of the wooden containers and Nayuta will do her shrine maiden dance for you (In super deformed/chibi mode).  She will then tell you what you have gotten.  What you get are small sound bytes of Nayuta talking about different things.  To access them, click the "List" button to the right of her.
Try to collect all of the sound bytes of her.  However, all of them are spoken in Japanese (Of course).... The bad part is that they do not come with any English translation that you can read along with what she is saying.
This is a very cute application.  It has a decent amount of add ons but they don't get in the way of the application.  The gallery mode gives you a reason to continue to use the calculator and talk to Nayuta.  The Omikuji part gives you more stuff to unlock.  Maybe you can try your hand at translating what she is saying.  I like the costume changes.  I do wish they were a little cheaper.  99 cents each would still give them a good profit without being 'too cheap.  I can't imagine spending 2.99 on a single outfit for this character.
I think anyone who likes cute versions of basic utilities will enjoy this.  Anyone who likes Japanese characters or cute animated characters and cartoons can also appreciate this.  The artwork is clean and very well drawn.  I love the cell style shading and how well the animations flow, when she moves.  The voice acting is very good as well.  It's free to use so why not give it a download?

  1. UPDATE: Right after completing this review I unlocked the first gallery image. I changed her into her Summer uniform and the image popped up automatically.
